My Transition

The Transition

For the past seven years of my study in art, graphic design and illustration I have learned a lot about aesthetics and how to apply it. Now, my task is  to go beyond the surface structure of passive, static illustrations into the deeper structures of animation, interaction and functionality.

The Brief

Passive, Static Illustration:

In popular belief, illustration is the art of traditional mediums; painting, drawings, etc. There are many methodologies in which to render an illustration beyond traditional means, such as computer applications like Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator.

These illustrative formats are a passive, one-way display on the viewer's behalf. This has been the case for most illustrations prior to the digital revolution.

This type of illustration gives an opportunity for the viewer to decide the meaning and communication of the illustration based on their own conceptual capabilities.

Passive, Moving Illustration:

Illustration is a visual expression of an idea - be it a story, poem, concept or information. In other words, it is the practice of manifesting something from the mind into a visual medium. This expands the definition and belief of what illustration means.

This then embraces the world of animation in full grasp. Animation is the one-way, passive but  moving format of illustration. The illustration comes to life as it expresses images and possible sounds as an event rather than just an object.

Passive, Moving Illustration:

The next level beyond passive, moving illustration is active, moving illustration. This is where there is an interactivity between the viewer (or now namely, user) and the illustration. The user gets to control certain parts of the events and objects inside of the illustration. Until the user acts up on the illustration it is passive. Activity comes from the participation of the user.

This level of illustration brings many opportunities for the user. It opens up a world of functionality and exploration. This is the level in which I wish to develop my work, into something more alive than my previous illustrations.
